Graduates who give back

The most rewarding aspect of CURA is to see the smiles and tears as sight is restored or someone has a new smile or can eat without pain. Additionally, to hear someone say, ‘I’ve never had a doctor just sit and listen to me!’ It is so much more fun to practice medicine in a situation that doesn’t involve excessive paperwork or regulations, just the doctor-patient relationship.

– Dr. Gregory Dunham, President & Medical Director, CURA Brazil, ('83)

In 2007, Dr. Gregory Dunham, Class of 1983, was challenged to take his faith beyond borders and into the communities of São Paolo, Brazil. Over the next two years, he developed CURA Brazil, a nonprofit that would provide services to people without access to basic medical care. During CURA’s very first outreach in 2009, a total of 745 patients were seen.

Despite the challenges of coordinating efforts across two continents and finding funding for equipment, CURA is now celebrating its 10th anniversary. Currently, CURA serves villages in Itu & Vila Progresso, providing year-round dentistry and ENT services through local Brazilian volunteers, and a one-week annual campaign with volunteers from around the world. Specialties typically include obstetrics, gynecology, cardiology, dentistry, optometry, ophthalmology (with pterygia removal), chiropractics, ultrasonography, ENT, pediatrics, physical therapy, nutrition, and counseling.

Nonmedical members of the team meet the other needs of patients by improving the overall health of the community. They repair roofs, kitchens, bathrooms, sewers, and install doors and windows. In addition, CURA also holds health education, yoga, and Bible classes.

Since their inception, CURA Brazil has seen over 7,207 patients and continues to grow and expand their services. Fellow UT Southwestern alumni can volunteer their time and talents as well.
