Thank you for your interest in UT Southwestern’s Day With an Alum and Residency City Connections mentorship programs, coordinated by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. These opportunities connect students with alumni who can share valuable insight into careers, residency life, and professional development.
Our Alumni Relations team works to match students and alumni based on specialty interests, availability, and location preferences.
Day With an Alum
Purpose
Provide students with a one-day, real-world observational experience to support career exploration with our alumni
Mentor commitments
- Host one student for a full workday during the academic year
- Introduce the student to the nuances of your work
- Model professionalism and ethical care (student do not provide patient care)
- Answer questions during or after the experience
- Complete a short post-experience survey
- Commit to mentoring for up to three years
Student expectations
- Shadow their assigned alum for one clinical day
- Communicate promptly and professionally
- Ask relevant, respectful questions
- Follow all hospital, clinic, and Federal guidelines including HIPAA
- Participate no more than twice during their academic career
Residency City Connections
Purpose
Offer students candid insights into residency programs through virtual or in-person conversations.
Mentor commitments
- Respond to match requests based on availability and interest
- Mentor at least one student per academic year
- Share honest impressions of your residency, current city, city’s lifestyle, and professional community
- Engage virtually or in-person during the student’s visit
- Complete a brief end-of-year check-in survey
- Commit to mentoring for up to three years
Student expectations
- Be respectful of alumni time and availability
- Come prepared with questions about city life, culture, cost of living, and professional experiences
- Reflect on their experience afterward and complete a brief feedback form
- Participate no more than twice during their academic career
