Gut bacteria play an important role in human health by helping break down certain complex carbohydrates and dietary fibers that you can’t break down on your own. Surprisingly, recent studies have shown that they also help viruses spread. Dr. Pfeiffer will discuss why parts of our own body facilitate viral replication and explore the impact of her research on understanding viral diseases.

  A scientist and medical research pioneer, Dr. Pfeiffer's work is redefining treatment for life-threatening viral infections. A member of the American Academy of Microbiology, she holds the B.B. Owen Distinguished Chair in Molecular Research and the Nadine and Tom Craddick Distinguished Chair in Medical Science.
