From Diagnosis to Devotion

It’s one thing to be diagnosed with kidney cancer twice. It’s another to be presented with such a grim prognosis the second time around. Before coming to UT Southwestern, the treatment options presented to Michael Besche ranged from five years with one option to an additional sixth year while taking a harsh medication with another.

Luckily for him, life had other plans, and a casual dinner chat with a well-connected acquaintance sparked an alternative. That conversation ultimately connected him with physicians Hans Hammers, M.D., Ph.D., and James Brugarolas, M.D., Ph.D., Professors in UT Southwestern’s Division of Hematology and Oncology. Since then, Mr. Besche has not only received medical care at UTSW but has also established a philanthropic bond.

Beyond the positive outcome lies a deep personal connection. Dr. Hammers initially made contact with Mr. Besche by calling him on New Year’s Day 2017 to discuss his health, a move of unusual kindness and empathy when most are focused solely on their own families and schedules. Reflecting on this unique relationship, Mr. Besche said, “I have never experienced such a profound connection with a physician.” It was this connection that prompted Mr. Besche to make multiple gifts to Dr. Hammers' research funds.

At UTSW, relationships like these speak to the heart of who the institution is. Those relationships are part of the core commitment UTSW makes to its patients – providing the highest standard of care to all who walk through the Medical Center's doors. After all, care isn’t conditional, it’s a calling.
