More Than a Memory

After a distinguished career in university fundraising, Jack Wilson’s life took an unexpected turn toward Dallas. He and his wife, Paula, left South Carolina after she received a diagnosis of multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare neurodegenerative condition. Though the move was prompted partly by a desire to be closer to their daughters, it also placed them closer to the esteemed MSA Clinic at UT Southwestern.

For 15 months, the couple frequently visited the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, where Mrs. Wilson received what Mr. Wilson could only describe as “exceptional and empathetic care by the most dedicated team of medical professionals and therapists, hands down.”

Mrs. Wilson fought every step of the way until her death in 2018. In the midst of his grief, Mr. Wilson returned to his familiar territory of philanthropy. “I wanted to remember Paula and support those who eased our challenging journey,” he said.

Establishing an endowment to advance MSA research, Mr. Wilson emphasized, “It’s more than just a donation, it’s a tribute to my wife and a way to help others receive the same level of care she did.”
