Southwestern Sweethearts -
Bethany and Mack Grubb
Bethany and Mack Grubb’s meet-cute took place the first day of physician assistant courses in the School of Health Professions. It was May of 2000, and Bethany was on crutches after undergoing a second ACL repair surgery. Unable to take the stairs, she had to ride the elevator from class to class. It was in there that she met Mack.
“His first impression of me was that I was quiet,” said Bethany. “On the other hand, I thought he was very cute!”
Those few serendipitous seconds launched a friendship that would grow from study partners to significant others. After traveling to Germany and Switzerland together over the holiday break, it was clear to both of them that they were more than platonic.
“We were careful to keep our relationship on the down-low,” said Bethany. “We spent all week with the same 35 people, and we worried about negative implications if things did not work out.”
Little did they know, there were two other couples in their class that would go on to get married!
Their dating relationship had its ups and downs, including a short break-up, but the pair ultimately realized they were meant to be. Along with a prosperous, 15-year marriage, the Grubbs built successful careers and a large family with five children. Bethany recently took a faculty position at UT Southwestern and Mack continues to work at his health system seeing patients one day a week and working as a PA leader the others.
Bethany and Mack Grubb are happy to report that they have never been better!
