Drs. Ellen and Craig Lockhart during Parent's Weekend

Drs. Ellen and Craig Lockhart met during medical school welcome activities prior to classes beginning. The incoming students hit it off right away and became the first couple in their class.

“Both of our parents were a little concerned,” said Dr. Ellen Lockhart. “After all of the hard work we put in to attend UT Southwestern, they became worried when we instantly entered into a serious relationship.”

Even their colleagues had a bit of advice, “Never date anyone in your class!”

Everyone’s fears were for naught however. The fall of their fourth year, the Drs. Lockhart were engaged – much to Dr. Craig Lockhart’s chagrin.

“Craig had planned a romantic proposal for the spring when we would both be in Paris for an elective rotation,” said Dr. Ellen Lockhart, “but I did not want go through Match Day with just a boyfriend!”

It’s been 26 years since they said, “I do.” Dr. Craig Lockhart chose to pursue oncology and Dr. Ellen Lockhart became an anesthesiologist. They are now successful physicians and proud parents of two, aged 16 and 21, and are busy knocking items off of their bucket lists.
