Southwestern Sweethearts -
Drs. Linda and Lannie Hughes
Drs. Linda and Lannie Hughes met the summer of 1964. Lannie was a third-year medical student who worked in the pathology lab of POB Montgomery, and Linda was a second-year working in the psychology department.
“A fellow student who worked in the lab with Lannie suggested he take me on a date,” said Linda. “He took me to dinner at El Fenix on Lemmon Avenue and bought us the $1.99 enchilada special. It was love at first sight - I instantly knew that I wanted to marry him and spend the rest of our lives together.”
When call schedules were released Linda would trade nights with other students to match Lannie’s agenda. She was almost always successful thanks to understanding colleagues and friends. The pair has now been happily married for 54 years.
“Lannie and I love going to work each day and hope the next generation of doctors has the same experience,” exclaimed Linda. “We knew UT Southwestern was a fabulous medical school and now the world knows it too!”
The Drs. Hughes were not the only couple to arise from the Classes of 1966 and 1967. Drs. Priscilla and Bill Berry were also married and went on to practice ophthalmology in Dallas. Both Linda and Priscilla, two of the four women in their class, were in each other’s weddings and continue to have a friendship.
